Many therapy models seek to solve problems and relieve symptoms simply by directing people to change their thinking. Foundationally, I believe therapy that seeks only to address and relieve symptoms falls short of creating significant and lasting change. While circumstances do exist where brief symptom relief is critical, I will always be looking to move beyond symptom relief toward lasting character change and meaningful relationships. I believe we are all created for satisfying and self-giving relationships and many problems that bring people into therapy are related to matters concerning our most significant relationships, both current and historically.

Because difficulty in relationships is often what brings people into therapy, I will focus much of my attention not only on those difficult relationships but also on the relationship developing between the two of us, with the idea that the relational dynamics that take place in the counseling setting generally parallel those outside the counseling setting.

To use psychological terms, my approach is largely existential/psychodynamic in nature. This simply means that I believe the most lasting and significant therapeutic change comes not only from applying techniques or theories, but more significantly from the relationship that develops between the counselor and the client.
